Rockhampton Celebrates Seniors Week 2013

By David Bell

Seniors Week is back and better than ever in 2013, and older Rockhampton residents are encouraged to check out the wide range of activities set to take place from August 17-25.

Rockhampton is an area much-loved for its family-friendly atmosphere, as well as it's suitability for older residents.

The celebration is the perfect chance for older owners of real estate in Rockhampton to participate in a range of activities being held by seniors' groups throughout the region, with everything from garden parties and old time dance to morning teas and concerts scheduled.

All in all, nearly 20 events will be held throughout the week. They're sure to highlight the theme of this year's Seniors Week, which is Respect and Social Inclusion.

This year, the festivities will be aiming to improve the attitude of the community towards older people and ageing, while also encouraging more older people in the area to participate and enjoy the many events and activities in Rockhampton.

"Seniors Week is an annual event which celebrates the contributions of seniors and challenges stereotypes about ageing," said Rose Swadling, chair of Rockhampton Council's Communities Committee, in an August 9 statement.

"I hope those living within our region get up and show the young ones just what they're all made of."
